At Visionary Eyecare & Surgery, Dr. Mason F. Bias is board certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology, and is a Fellow of The American College of Surgeons. Additionally, Dr. Bias has achieved the distinction of being one of only four surgeons in the state to be board certified as a cataract specialist by the American Board of Eye Surgery. Patients are guaranteed that their cataract surgery will be performed by a board certified cataract specialist who is also a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, making Visionary Eyecare & Surgery this region’s premier provider of cataract care.

AMERICAN BOARD OF OPHTHALMOLOGY

Founded in 1916, the American Board of Ophthalmology was the first board certification of any medical specialty in the United States. Requirements for Board Certification consist of first earning your Medical Doctorate Degree, followed by a four-year minimum residency at an accredited ophthalmology residency training program in the United States. Upon completion of their residency training, candidates then sit for a day-long written examination covering all areas of ophthalmology. Those who pass the written examination then proceed to take an oral examination the following year, which consists of a day-long interview process with at least six different interviewers, again, covering all areas in the field of ophthalmology. Certification by the American Board of Ophthalmology assures patients that their ophthalmologist posses competent medical knowledge in all areas of the field.

AMERICAN BOARD OF EYE SURGERY

Founded in 1998 by the American College of Eye Surgeons, the American Board of Eye Surgery offers board certification as a cataract specialist. The certification process is a rigorous evaluation that lasts approximately a year, consisting of chart reviews focusing on surgical outcomes, analysis of surgical video tapes by a panel of cataract specialists, and finally culminates in an onsite observation of live surgery by representatives of the American Board of Eye Surgery. By choosing a surgeon who is board certified in cataract surgery, a patient can rest assured knowing their cataract surgeon has the skills and experience necessary to help restore their vision.

Founded in 1913, the American College of Surgeons is a scientific and educational association of surgeons dedicated to setting high standards for surgical education and practice. Fellowship in the College of Surgeons assures that the surgeon’s education and training, professional qualifications, surgical competence, and ethical conduct have passed a rigorous evaluation, and have found to be consistent with the high standards established and demanded by the College.
